Painted with a big mossy green horseshoe on each side I might guess by using the actual horseshoes as templates. And inside, there they are, heavy iron ones, in silver, with what look to me like marching feet at their ends. JNC constructed mounts for holding and locking them in place one of which still does the job, the other seems to
