Ely Culbertson (1891 1955) played a prominent role in the development of contract bridge in the 1930s, when the game enjoyed a boom in popularity. A well as being one of the best players of bridge of his day, he also taught the game and wrote books and published magazines about it. He married his first wife, Josephine, herself a successful player, in 1923.
