The painterly white and inky dark blue glazing around the body of the vase has been incised to reveal the black slip underneath
was carried by a policeman in the 1920s or so
And there is a second signed drawing titled "Bugs" on the back as well

I love the gestural shape of the flat blade, with notch that maybe identifies it as a paring knife (?), but of course it's especially about the carved boot of a handle for me, much much handled and blackened from use (and maybe it got a bit too close to the fire once or twice, too.) Seems maybe earlier than later 19th c. American to me, including based on the shape of that boot, though I am no knife expert, and
