I'm also not quite sure what is was made for--perhaps for spools of thread and thimbles

beautifully stained from use

with a few small tears and darkening along the edges

Each cufflink is marked 585 on the stem

including a ginkgo leaf near center

(I do think this is at least a hundred years old.)
