Turkey and Grease Size:XL: 100 x 80cm View of Daniel Defoe in'Turkey and Grease', 1869. At the end of December 1868, there was a divergence of opinion between Greece and Turkey that threatened to lead to armed conflict. A hastily arranged conference of leading nations was to take place in Paris in the New Year. In this cartoon, then, Greece is the Turkey on the spit and Napoleon and Britannia are amongst those nations endeavouring to extinguish the fire. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 2, 1869.
